AUSTRALIAN FILM EXPLORES DIFFICULT THEMES

Islamabad;The Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Dr Geoffrey Shaw, today hosted a screening of the Australian film Guilty and participated in a panel discussion on its themes.The event was part of the-annual Human Rights Reel film festival organised by the European Union and United Nations in the run up to International Human Rights Day.Dr Shaw commended the film festival as a constructive way to foster public discussion about human rights. The Australian entry explored difficult themes around the death penalty.“The film Guilty is a thoughtful and sensitive work about Myuran Sukumaran, an Australian executed overseas for drug smuggling in 2015,” Dr Shaw said.“Myuran spent a decade on death row before facing the firing squad. During this time, he became an accomplished painter and art teacher. Art gave him purpose and a path to rehabilitation, but both were cut short.”Dr Shaw hoped that Guilty – which had been shown to acclaim at film festivals around the world – would resonate well with the Pakistani audience.“Australian states and territories gradually abolished the death penalty over the course of the 20th century. In 2010, the Australian Government passed a law that prevents any Australian state or territory from ever reintroducing the death penalty,” he said.“Australia encourages every country to join us in ending the death penalty in all circumstances for all people,” Dr Shaw said.The Founder of Justice Project Pakistan Sarah Belal and human rights activist Tahira Abdullah joined the panel discussion moderated by TV host Amber Shamsi.
آسٹریلوی فلم کے زریعے انسانی حقوق کی نمائندگی

پاکستان میں آسٹریلوی ہائی کمشنر ڈاکٹر جیفری شا نے آج آسٹریلوی فلم گلٹی (گناہگار) کی نمائش کی میزبانی کی اور فلم کے موضوع پہ ایک پینل ڈسکشن میں حصہ لیا۔یہ پروگرام انسانی حقوق کے عالمی دن سے قبل یوروپی یونین اور اقوام متحدہ کے زیر اہتمام سالانہ ہیومن رائٹس ریل فلم فیسٹیول کا حصہ تھا۔
ڈاکٹر شا نے کہا کے یہ فلم فیسٹیول انسانی حقوق کے بارے میں عوامی مباحثے کو فروغ دینے کا ایک تعمیری طریقہ ہے اور آسٹریلوی فلم میں سزائے موت سے متعلق کچھ مشکل موضوعات کی بات کی گئی ہے۔ڈاکٹر شا نے کہا ، فلم گلٹی میورن سکومارن کے بارے میں ایک حساس فلم ہے ، جسے ۲۰۰۵ میں منشیات کی اسمگلنگ کے الزام میں بیرون ملک سزا ئے موت دی گئی۔”میوران نے سزائے موت سے قبل موت کے انتظار میں جیل میں ایک دہائی گذاری۔ اس دوران ، وہ ایک ماہر پینٹر اور آرٹ ٹیچر بن گیا۔ فن نے اسے ایک مقصد دیا اور وہ اپنی اصلاح کی راہ پہ چل نکلا – لیکن سزائے موت نے اس کے ان عزائم کو ختم کردیا ۔ڈاکٹر شا نے کہا انہیں امید ہے کہ فلم گلٹی جسے پوری دنیا میں فلمی میلوں میں پذیرائی ملی ہے، پاکستانی شائقین کو بھی متاثر کرے گی۔آسٹریلوی ریاستوں اور علاقوں نے 20 ویں صدی میں بتدریج سزائے موت ختم کردی تھی ۔ ۲۰۱۰ میں ، آسٹریلوی حکومت نے ایک ایسا قانون پاس کیا جس کے تحت کسی بھی آسٹریلوی ریاست یا علاقے کو سزائے موت کا نفاذ کرنے سے روک دیا گیا ہے۔ڈاکٹر شا نے کہا ، “آسٹریلیا ہر ملک کو دعوت دیتا ہے کہ وہ ہر صورت میں اور تمام لوگوں کے لئے، سزائے موت کے خاتمے کےلئے ہمارے ساتھ آواز اٹھائیں۔”جسٹس پروجیکٹ پاکستان کی بانی سارہ بلال، انسانی حقوق کی کارکن طاہرہ عبد اللہ، اور ٹی وی میزبان امبر شمسی نے بھی پینل ڈسکشن میں شرکت کی
