RAWALPINDI: The unopposed elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor Rawalpindi Sardar Naseem Khan and Ch. Tariq Mehmood took oath of their respective offices here at Rawalpindi Arts Council on other day. Additional Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi Nazia Perveen Sudhan presided over the oath-taking ceremony held at Rawalpindi Arts Council. Speaking at this occasion, Mayor Rawalpindi Sardar Naseem Khan said that additional development projects would be launched in the city to facilitate the residents. He gave the credit to Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif who is taking keen interest in the welfare of the people. He vowed that he will play his due part to facilitate common people and raise their living standards. He said that by electing him people have shown great faith and imposed greatest responsibility and he will try is level best to meet their expectations. Along-with mega projects like Metro-bus, Cardiology Center, Shahbaz Shareef Park, up gradation of schools and hospitals is also under our consideration and we will bring it down to the street work as well. He said that rather than slogans and claims we believe in work and our action will speak louder. We will not leave any stone unturned to nip the evil of corruption in the bud and make our society corruption free and prosperous. Eelier the Oath-taking ceremony was divided into two sessions, one for Mayor and other for Deputy Mayor Rawalpindi. Administrator Rawal Town Nazia Sudhan presided over both sessions and administered oath from both. While congratulating elected Mayor and deputy Mayor, presiding Officer Ms. Nazia Sudhan said that need of hour is to join hand together for the welfare of people and carry on implementation of development schemes in Rawalpindi. She strongly opposed corruption and advised newly elected representatives to make efforts for corruption free society by rooting out this plague from every organization. That would be the only way that by fulfilling their obligations they could answer the confidence that public reposed in them otherwise they will risk their future position before voters.

There are 46 Union Councils in Municipal Corporation Rawalpindi (MCR), the body which controls local government of Rawalpindi. The Union Councils elect their Chairmen and Vice Chairmen who then elect their Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively. The seats of Rawalpindi Deputy Mayors have been increased from 1 to 5. About Rawalpiṇḍi, commonly known as Pindi (Punjabi: پنڈی), is a city in the Punjab, Pakistan. It is the fourth-largest city in Pakistan by population, while the larger Islamabad Rawalpindi metropolitan area is the country’s third-largest area. The economy of Rawalpindi is interlinked with Islamabad, and the two are jointly known as the “twin cities”. The city is the administrative seat of the Rawalpindi District.
Rawalpindi is located on the Pothohar Plateau, which is known for the existence of a Buddhist community, particularly in neighboring town of Taxila, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.[2] The city was destroyed during the invasion of Mahmud of Ghazni before being taken over Gakhars who went on to name the city as “Rawalpindi” in 1493. In 1765, Gakhar’s where defeated as Rawalpindi became part of the Sikh Empire. The city became part of the British Raj in 1849 and in 1851 became the largest garrison town for the British Indian Army. After the partition of India in 1947, the city became home to the headquarters of Pakistan Army hence retaining its status as a major military city.
The city received a major boost with the start of the construction of Islamabad in 1961 which saw greater investment and even enjoyed a brief stunt as the country’s temporary capital. The modern-day city is socio-economically tied with Islamabad and the larger metropolitan area, with a large people commuting to Islamabad, particularly due to the presence of several suburb‘s in Rawalpindi. The city is also a major transit point due to presence on the Grand Trunk Road and presence of Benazir Airport and the under-construction Liaquat Airport. The city is also a tourist attraction due to its historical haveli‘s, while it is a popular transit point for tourists visiting Rohtas Fort, Azad Kashmir, Taxila and Gilgit-Baltistan.
