The city of Islamabad, located at the foot of the green Margalla hills, is considered one of the most beautiful capitals of the world. Many peaceful and interesting places in Islamabad are waiting to welcome the tourists. Among them, the archeological natural caves of ShahAllah Dutta are waiting for the special attention of the government. This place is located at the foothills of Margalla Hills, a little away from Sector D12 of Islamabad. There are a few caves between the mountains, a garden and a natural spring with water flowing down the road. This place is also known as ShahAllah Dutta’s Cave or Buddha’s Cave. This cave used to be a place of worship for Buddhist monks in ancient times, while a man named ShahAllah Dutta was the head of this settlement centuries ago after whom the place was named ShahAllah Dutta. Hanging roots of banyan trees several stories high cover these caves. There are mango trees in the garden, there are hundreds of years old banyan trees, the whole area was actually an ancient highway through which Afghanistan and India were connected. There is an ancient well built by Sher Shah Suri. About 25 minutes from ShahAllah Dutta, the Margalla hills have hiking trails known as trails. There are a total of six trails, the most popular being trail three and trail five. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met us yesterday. Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told us that we are starting Margalla Trail Patrol to protect the beautiful trails of Margalla, especially for the safety of foreigners who like to come here to enjoy the natural scenery. The tripartite security corps includes trail motorcycles, mounted police, mounted police and foot patrols. It should be noted that there have been incidents of robbery and mugging with local and foreign nationals on different trails of Islamabad. A road leads up from the caves of Shahullah Dutta where the higher you go the more beautiful the view of the valley and the city of Islamabad will be in front of you. After a point here, Haripur Division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province begins.
Yesterday, during a brief visit to ShahAllah Dutta village, I heard the hissing of the Margalla hills, the screams of the trees, the whispers of the birds, which are waiting for the special attention of the government. Now the Margalla hills are turning into a concrete jungle. During I saw the youths uprooting and swinging the roots of centuries old banyan trees, which is a very shameful act of the new generation.
Many residential, commercial buildings and housing societies near Margalla are becoming unwarranted. How is it possible that we are giving license to destroy nature in the name of development? Birds have migrated due to the construction of concrete jungle. Where the birds sing in the natural environment, there is now silence, nature and the trees are praying to be saved from the concrete jungle. It can be seen that the construction of buildings near Margalla Hills is fast, due to which the natural environment and the beauty of the area are being badly damaged. Ban it. A police picket was immediately erected at the entry point to protect the tourists as mostly Buddhist pilgrims visit the historical site.
Syed Hasan Ali’s ancestors also belonged to this historic religious village, who told us that former Deputy Mayor Islamabad Zeeshan Naqvi belonged to this village. The Pakistani government needs to pay special attention to these types of historical religious places to promote mutual harmony between different religions, it can generate a lot of revenue. Yesterday I realized that there are government offices in ShahAllah Dutta village but no one was present in these offices to guide the tourists.
Remember that the first time in recent history, Buddhists performed their religious rites in the 2,500-year-old Buddhist caves situated in Shah Allah Ditta, a suburb of Islamabad.
Most important thing is that the village is named after Shah Allah Ditta, a dervish/Wali belonging to the Mughal era. Shah Allah Ditta is 650 years the oldest village of Islamabad.
And is a homeland to ancient caves that echo the remnants of bygone civilisations and religions.
This year Vesak or Buddha Day festival will commemorating the birth, attainment of Nirvana, founder Gautama Buddha in Pakistan in the month of May. This celebration is an integral part of Buddhism.
Vesak in 2022 was celebrated in Islamabad, Taxila and the surrounding Gandhara area, where the remains of Buddhist places of worship are located.
Various events were also organised, and apart from foreign Buddhist monks, ambassadors of different countries and – for the first time – a Pakistani Buddhist delegation from Sindh participated in the festival.
The 2500-year-old Buddhist caves at the foot of Margalla Hills Islamabad near in west of Taxila, east of Islamabad and in the central area of Khanpur.
Historically, these caves are located along an ancient road. When the city of Rawalpindi came into being in the 16th century, this road was used to travel directly from Kabul, Peshawar, Attock and Hassan Abdal to Rawalpindi, and from there to Lahore and Delhi. It also ran along the caves of Shah Allah Ditta and is also known as Grand Trunk Road or GT Road.
Over time, this road disappeared, but its remnants still exist today. All the religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and Islam have revered these caves in every era.
Many historical figures including Alexander the Great, Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka the Great, Kautilya Chanakya, Hazrat Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti, Data Ali Hujwiri, Sher Shah Suri, and Panini a renowned Sanskrit grammarian ,the famous Mughal Emperor Jahangir not only passed through this spot but also stayed and quenched their thirst with the cold water of the springs here.
A spring, a pond and a garden still exist near the Shah Allah Ditta Caves. There are some banyan trees in the garden, while all other fruit trees are gone. The water from the same spring was used to irrigate the garden adjoining the caves.
During the Mughal period, when India was the center of Sufism originating from Arabia and Central Asia, a saint named Shah Allah Ditta stayed in this garden and was entombed here. The place formerly attributed to sadhus, monks, or jogis is today known for the famous Sufi Shah Allah Ditta.
Moreover near to these caves is also an ancient baoli (stepwell) in the village of Kanthila, which is said to have been built by Sher Shah Suri.
A per according to the information given in the historical books about the boundaries of these caves, these caves made of Kanjur stones are 40 metres long, 60 meters wide and eight meters high.
These caves, which are of great importance in Buddhism, present a picture of desolation today where drug addicts have set up camp. According to the locals, scary sounds come from here at night and shadows can be seen moving.
The government should build a permanent place of worship for the Buddhist where they can perform their religious rites.
Remember that if appropriate steps are taken for the rehabilitation and repair of Buddhist places of worship, it will not only promote religious tourism but will also present a positive image of Pakistan in the world.
As a Proud Pakistani , we must protect the rights of minorities so that the message of peace and love can be conveyed.
The Shah Allah Ditta caves is history and on emergency basis steps must to be taken urgently to protect the Buddhist cultural heritage and open up new avenues for tourism.
